Making Full Guard
Keep your center of gravity on top of your opponent never let your weight leave between your opponents chest and belly button from this position keeping a wide base with your knees while keeping your hands up to guard your face. From here you can attack the head with full force, or go for a hold. You can get thrown off if you don't pay attention so don't loose focus pick your punches. Aim for the chin, and the ribs if their face is to protected. After they are tired get a hold. Practice on the heavy bag staying close to the bag and picking your punches to the face, while throwing a rib shot every so often to keep you use to it. I suggest throwing to jabs to the face then a hook to the ribs try fifty of these combinations within two minutes.
Those are just some basic guard passes to help you if your fight goes to the ground. I'm gonna cover some ways to defend yourself when you hit the ground.
Butterfly Guard
If you are knocked down and your opponent is standing directly over top of you. Lift your feet between you and your opponent, as if you were in a sitting position with your feet shoulder width apart in the air. Keep your fists by your jaws as you do in stand up combat if they are reaching over your feet to strike at you. Use your feet to push them away or even kick them if you have the chance. Once your opponent has backed off at least three feet.
Put your hands down by your sides and push yourself up and back as hard as you can bringing your feet down quickly as possible. Once you are up place your right foot behind you to stop yourself from falling back, and put your hands up by your jaw bones again. I suggest laying in butterfly position and practice springing up to your feet, to increase your chances of getting back up quicker. I suggest trying this at least fifty times in two minutes.
Defending The Left Quarter Guard
As your opponent is trying to slide his left knee over you to get full guard position. Rap your legs around his left leg , and grab his wrists to try and gain control of his arms. Grabbing at the wrists gives you more leverage to use against your opponent. Remember to use your fists and elbows to strike your opponents chin and ribs to slow him down. Once both your legs are locked around his right leg you are in quarter guard. Its almost impossible to practice this move with out a partner, but remember its just practice so don't hurt each other. I suggest trying to keep your opponent from passing your left quarter guard at least fifty times in five minutes.
Defending The Right Quarter Guard
As your opponent is trying to slide his right knee over you to get full guard position. Rap your legs around his right leg, and grab his wrists to try and gain control of his arms. Grabbing at the wrists gives you more leverage to use against your opponent. Remember to use your fists and elbows to strike your opponents chin and ribs to slow him down. Once both your legs are locked around his left leg you are in quarter guard. Its almost impossible to practice this move with out a partner, but remember its just practice so don't hurt each other. I suggest trying to keep your opponent from passing your right quarter guard at least fifty times in five minutes.
Defending Against Full Guard
Keep your head as close to your opponents chest if possible it will keep him from hitting you straight in the face while you are thinking of a plan. If you get to tired and haven't had an idea of how to get out from under your opponent.
Lay flat on your back with your fist up over your jaws to protect your face just like stand up combat. Now getting out from under your opponent by raising your left leg as high as possible then drop it fast pushing away from your opponent.
Then raise your right leg as high as possible and drop it pushing away from your opponent. Slowly you will move back, but if you don't move fast they will keep right on top of you so do this as fast as possible. I suggest practicing with a partner and try to get out of full guard while keeping your face covered. Try getting out of full guard fifty times in five minutes.
It is possible to get holds in all of these circumstances, but it would take forever to write them all down.
These are just a couple basic ways to try and defend yourself while on the ground. Just remember to protect your face and to strike your opponent when you have the opening. Always keep your chin tucked to your chest and always try to get your opponent off of you, and spring up to your feet as quick as possible. It will at least give you the chance to run if you are on the street fighting. Remember the ground is the last place you want to be in a life or death situation.
Hope this helps you guys in your training
